Creative Sector Investment Case Studies

Te Taumata Toi-a-Iwi has co-invested alongside Creative New Zealand and Auckland Council to produce a series of case studies that examine funder intersections and funding challenges in the creative sector. This work has been developed in collaboration with the Tāmaki Makaurau Arts Investors Forum.

The case studies feature a diverse range of arts organisations in terms of scale, structure, artform and context. We give thanks to Auckland Theatre Company, ASB Polyfest, Michael King Writers Centre, Sistema Aotearoa, Te Pou Theatre and Touch Compass for generously giving time and sharing their experiences.

A range of common themes have been identified across these case studies, which have been collated into an accompanying insights report. This report highlights the important and interrelated roles that different investors play in supporting the creative sector. It also surfaces a range of financial pressures (e.g., rising costs, revenue volatility) and commonly experienced challenges with the current funding system (e.g., underfunding, heavy reliance on few funders, the resource burden of seeking/managing grant funding).

The case studies and insights report are companion documents to the Creative Sector Investment Ecosystem Mapping report 2024, recently published as a fourth edition. This maps funding data from Investors Forum members to identify funding trends and common investment outcomes.

Findings from both reports have been presented to the Investors Forum and work is ongoing to explore ways in which the Forum can continue to work together to strengthen the creative sector investment ecosystem.
