Taxation and the not-for-profit sector submissions closing 31 March 2025
Te Taumata Toi-a-Iwi has made a submission on Inland Revenue’s “Taxation and the not-for-profit sector” proposed changes.
The IRD website states: “Public views are sought on matters relating to the charities and not-for-profit sector. The consultation document considers whether certain tax concessions available to the sector continue to be effective. It also explores whether tax obligations can be simplified, and compliance costs minimised.” Read here. An officials’ issues paper was released on 25 February 2025. Submissions close 31 March 2025.
We see these proposed changes as potentially having a hugely negative impact on the arts, culture and creative not-for-profit sector. Not-for-profits are generally stretched operationally and financially; to tax their revenue may see many Charitable Trusts unable to deliver core services and activities.
